Court Upholds City’s Right to Ban High IQ Applicants for Police Academy

So I’m sitting at my desk and reading a story on The Daily Sheeple that was reported originally by ABC News about a 49 year old college graduate that wants to be a Law Enforcement officer. He took the entrance examination in 1996 and has been fighting a legal battle ever since.  It seems that this potential law enforcement officer scored too well on the entrance exam.

“Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.”

At first I thought I misread the article and therefore when to the source article on the ABC News.com site. Nope, I read it correctly. Jordan is too smart to be a police officer in New London, Connecticut.

“Most Cops Just Above Normal The average score nationally for police officers is 20 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.”

So…if you score below 21 on the entrance exam, they must conclude perhaps that you are not smart enough to follow orders from your superiors and potentially be a danger to yourself and others. If you score above 27, it appears that the city of New London thinks you may get bored with police work. Or maybe the real reason is they fear you may be able to think for yourself and not blindly follow orders from superiors.

It is quite disconcerting to know that ones hopes, dreams, and passions can be so easily squashed simply because you scored too well on a test.

I wonder how many overly smart doctors, dentists, engineers, etc. were likewise kept from their dream. Think about this the next time you visit your doctor or dentist. Think about this the next time you drive across a bridge or walk through a crowded shopping mall or highrise building. Were the best and brightest restricted from participating in these professional occupations as well?

Why?
